Edna Coatsworth

Born in London now living on the Isle of Wight.

My work can be colourful, bold and gestural but my favoured medium is charcoal I work on paper using mixed media. I work fast and furiously and directly from the life model. I then rework and develop the image in the studio. I draw on large sheets of paper and often spill over onto more sheets, pinned or taped on in overlapping extensions to accommodate the burgeoning scope of the drawing.

I sometimes turn to the landscape but this work often starts with a figure drawing which morphs into a portrait of an island scene captured on a walk in the area around Freshwater Bay. I love the serendipity of drawing and painting and the excitement of discovering new media and methods of working. Monoprinting and screen-printing are a recent departure.

Works have been exhibited locally on the Isle of Wight, including the Quay Arts Centre in Newport, the Alchemist Gallery in Yarmouth.  In 2010 I became a member of the lymington Palette Club and have exhibited at three annual shows in Lymington. 2009 saw a showing of works in Dorset. An Exhibition based on Jazz musicians opened at the Quay Arts Centre in December 2009 and went on to be shown in Chichester.

2015 includes an exhibition at Quarr Abbey on the Isle of Wight in March, a combined exhibition at Quay Arts centre, Isle of Wight in April / May, open studios in July, Lymington palette club exhibition in August and a one man show at Brading on the Isle of Wight in November.
